The Psychology of Conversational Copywriting
So, I recently did a 2025 vision board (highly recommend!) and along with my words for the year like abundance, happiness, and family, I decided to include “new car” on it. Not because I don’t love my trusty 2010 Rav4, but you know, a girl could use an upgrade!
Anywho, when we went to look at cars, we were bombarded with super pushy sales people, and every time we spoke to a salesperson, we felt forced to make a huge decision on the spot, and naturally we recoiled!
We ended up hopping around dealerships searching for a person who could have an actual conversation with us. You know, without pushing us to sign something 2 sentences in, and it was honestly way harder than we thought it would be!
Have you ever noticed how you're more likely to buy something from a friend or someone you can relate to than a pushy salesperson?
That's not just coincidence – it's psychology at work.
As someone who's spent years studying consumer behavior and writing copy, I've seen firsthand how conversational copywriting consistently outperforms traditional hard-sell approaches and why more businesses should add it to their marketing strategy.
The Science of Building Trust Through Conversation
Research from the Journal of Consumer Psychology shows that when people feel they're having a genuine conversation rather than being sold to, their defense mechanisms lower by up to 40%.
This 100% explains why we left quite a few of those dealerships!
A 2023 study by Nielsen found that 92% of consumers trust recommendations from people they know, while only 33% trust traditional advertisements.
One of the main reasons we're leaning heavily towards Subaru!!
Okay, humor me and think about the last purchase you made (sans weekly grocery shopping) - what prompted you to buy it? Did a friend text you a rave review? Did you read a review that told a story you could relate to? Did your mom send you an article link with a play by play on what your takeaways might be? (Does anyone else’s mom do this?!)
Whatever the case may be, I’m willing to bet that it was by recommendation from someone you trusted and liked…
Why Your Brain Loves a Good Chat
Here's what happens in your brain during a natural conversation:
When we engage in friendly dialogue, our brains release oxytocin – often called the "trust hormone” or “bonding hormone.” Dr. Paul Zak's research at Claremont Graduate University found that higher oxytocin levels make people 76% more likely to engage with and trust a message.
"The brain processes conversational language differently than promotional content," explains Dr. Sarah Matthews, a neuroscience researcher. "It activates regions associated with social connection rather than skepticism."
When you’re vulnerable and share relatable experiences, you trigger a response with people who resonate and empathize. You know, like little reminders that we’re not alone and that we’re important.
Your marketing is the perfect place to show your audience that you get it and are there for them. Don’t miss out on those strong foundational opportunities!
Conversational Copywriting in Action
Let's look at some real-world examples that I personally use and love:
Okay, first up, let’s talk about Airbnb.
This app transformed the travel industry not just through their easy to use platform, but through their masterful use of conversational storytelling.
Their "Belong Anywhere" campaign was a hit because it focused on human connection rather than traditional hotel-style marketing. By sharing real host and traveler stories in their authentic voices, they grew from a startup to a hopping global company.
Their approach of letting hosts write their own listings in their natural voice has created millions of pieces of genuine, conversational content that converts better than any professional copy could. Why? Because people respond to shared experiences and common language!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely stayed at places specifically based on how the host described the listing and how past guests shared their experience. It just feels better when you know who’s space you’re staying in for vacation, you know?
Next up, FloDesk.
This email marketing platform is obsession worthy, with their refreshingly human centered approach and easy to navigate layout.
Instead of focusing on technical features and using jargon that only a handful of entrepreneurs would know, they speak directly to creative entrepreneurs (like you and me) in their language.
Their famous line "Your emails deserve to be as beautiful as your brand" resonates because it sounds like something a friend would say over a much needed hype up coffee sesh.
This approach helped them grow to over 200,000 users in just a few years, largely through word-of-mouth from happy customers who felt understood rather than sold to.
They used knowledge of their customer base, and took their lead on the tone for the marketing strategy and platform layout.
Last up , Honeybook.
Ugh, I seriously don’t know what I’d do without Honeybook.
HoneyBook reshaped client management for creative entrepreneurs by speaking their language authentically and consistently checking in with their users.
Their copywriting stands out because it addresses real pain points in a relatable way: "Finally, you can spend more time in your zone of genius and less time wrestling with admin."
This empathetic approach resonates with their audience of photographers, designers, and other creatives who want to focus on their craft rather than paperwork (sound familiar?)
By building their messaging around real user stories and pain points, they've grown their community to over 100,000 creative entrepreneurs who feel truly understood and supported.
I have and love Honeybook, and I gotta tell ya - I giggle at the silly little messages that pop up when I sign in! It’s truly the little things that can make all the difference, don't you think?
The Psychology Behind Why It Works
Mirror Neurons: Our brains are wired to mirror the emotions and behaviors we observe. When copy feels like a natural conversation, we're more likely to engage with it positively.
Cognitive Fluency: Studies from the Harvard Business Review show that when information is presented in a conversational way, it's processed up to 30% faster and remembered better.
Authenticity Factor: Research from the University of Southern California found that authentic communication triggers positive emotional responses in 87% of consumers.
This is exactly why I encourage my clients to keep their fav words and infuse themselves in every piece of their marketing.
I also recommend doing a deep dive into the way their audience communicates and the words they use! Because it's so fun when you read someone’s marketing and think - “woah they’re talkin’ my language!” or “I can totally hear them say this!”
How to Make Your Copy More Conversational
Remember the last great conversation you had? That's your template for great copywriting.
Here's why it works and why you should give it a try:
It flows naturally
It acknowledges the other person's perspective
It uses everyday language
It tells stories
It admits imperfections (because nobody trusts perfection)
It’s YOU
I get it, it’s easy to overthink this - but try to have a convo with someone you love about your biz.
I don’t have some fancy and fun prompt, just tell them about it. Tell them what you do, why you do it, who you do it for, and why you started. Because I’m betting that if you record it, you have a perfect outline for writing copy that sounds and feels like you!
The ROI of Being Real
The numbers don't lie. Companies using conversational marketing approaches see:
20% increase in sales opportunities (Drift, 2023)
35% higher engagement rates (Content Marketing Institute)
42% better customer retention (HubSpot)
We are emotional beings, we buy with our emotions. We crave being heard, understood, and cared for. What better way to make someone feel like they’re a priority than speaking to them from the heart, with a solution to top it all off!
Okay, Last Thing…
Think of conversational copywriting as building a bridge between you and your reader.
A big part of using psychology backed techniques is using it to sell your service or product ethically.
Listen to your audience, take time to understand them and get to know them. Then share your solution with them in a way that makes sense for them, and let them decide their next move.
Now I’m not saying don’t make it clear you’re sharing an amazing solution to their problem, but make it so they feel like they have the freedom to make the decision that works for them. (AKA, don’t be like those super pushy car salesmen!)
Remember: people don't buy from businesses. People buy from people.
They buy from people they trust.
They buy from people who listen, take time to connect, and value others.
They buy from people like YOU.
